The 2022 ASA Australian Young Farmer Challenge National Finals were held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, hosted by the RAS of NSW Youth Group.

Justin Matthews is a co-coordinator of the 2022 National Competition, in conjunction with Rebecca Anderson of RAS NSW and Andrew Horne of RAS NSW Youth Group. Justin recently shared,

“A new format this year saw the exam delivered in a live quiz format in the arena prior to the practical round of competition”. Reflecting on the event, Justin said, “the rule of the game each year is if we’re having fun then the audience is having fun: and that brief was certainly delivered!”.

The Competition was funded by ASA through our AYFC project with the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Challenges were varied and tested competitors knowledge of agriculture in a range of farm-based theory questions and practical tasks.

Congratulations to the competitors and organisers on a great event.

QLD captain Lawrence Sehmish-Lahey shared his thoughts on winning “We were ecstatic to be announced winners followed closely by the WA team, and all looked forward to the afterparty and official presentations in the corporate suite. Here we really got to know the other teams over a couple of cold ones, mateships that made for a great night.  All of us look forward to growing the Young Farmer Challenge at our local shows and hope to visit the shows of our new interstate mates.”
