2021 CANNING SHOW
The Canning Agricultural, Horticultural and Recreational Society Inc (CAHRS) was one of the lucky societies in the country able to hold a show in November 2020. The Show was one of the first large events permitted in WA after Covid 19 lockdown and at that time there were no guidelines to follow, so it was up to us to create the standards that the authorities would accept. Adjustments from the normal arrangements had to be made and as it turns out, a number of those modifications have become our normal!
One of the most successful modification was to introduce three attendance sessions occurring across the show duration and moving to 100% on-line ticketing.
Roll on 2021 and we have just held another very successful Canning Show on the first weekend in November. The weather was wonderful, two out of three sessions sold out and a record-breaking crowd of 15,500 happy people from a wide range of cultures and ages attended. The changes we made in 2020 were no longer challenges and were readily accepted by the patrons.
This year, the City of Canning (our local area) marked its 150th anniversary of local government authority. To highlight to their celebrations, they worked collaboratively with CAHRS to provide a large and colorful maze highlighting significant historical facts of the area. In return, our gift to the city was three thousand tickets to give residents of the district. Patrons attending Saturday session of the Show witnessed Australian Airforce Cadet Squadrons 702 and 713 (that have their headquarters on the showgrounds) parading proudly to receive Freedom of Entry to the City of Canning presented by Mayor Patrick Hall. The start of the parade was signaled by two Tiger-Moth aircraft flying overhead.
Hundreds of performers and local businesses were supported, as were a number of charitable organisations who are faithful partners helping us to fine-tune specific delivery of various aspects of the event. Plenty of free entertainment was on offer throughout to demonstrate our commitment to keep the experience related and affordable.
There was a strong presence of 343 exhibitors, entering 2580 (just over three hundred above average) solely created, grown or produced items into competitive classes. Then, of course, there were a sizable number of excited winners receiving acknowledgement and prize money to reward them for their efforts. We are fortunate enough to be able to hold a gala Presentation Evening two weeks after the show, by which time, the volunteers have caught their breath and are ready for a glass of wine.
During the Show 100 volunteers contributed a recorded 1015 hours of work. We thank all volunteers; they are an exceptional group of community-minded people. People worked tirelessly to provide a marketed, aesthetically pleasing, well planned and presented, safe and exciting, booming Live Lighter 2021 Canning Show.
